Huang and Graduate Students Win Runner-up for Best Paper

Baoshan HuangCEE PhD graduate Sheng Zhao and faculty co-authors received a Runner-up Best Paper Award at the 6th European Asphalt Technology Association (EATA) Conference held at Swedish Royal Technical University (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden, June 13 – 17, 2015.

The paper, entitled “Investigation on Microstructures of RAS Binder and Its Blending with Virgin Bitumen,” was a collaborative work between the University of Tennessee – Knoxville and the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in Netherlands as part of Sheng Zhao’s Ph.D. dissertation research. Co-authors include Drs. Baoshan Huang and Xiang Shu from UT CEE, TU Delft PhD student Sayed Nahar, Research Scientist Alexander Schmets, and Professor Tom Scarpas.

The EATA Conference is one of the most influential academic conferences for asphalt pavement research community and is held once every two years. Out of a total of 70 papers received for EATA 2015, 23 were accepted for presentation and publication at the International Journal of Road Materials and Pavement Design. Eight papers were nominated for Best Paper Award. One paper among the eight was awarded for Best Paper and two were recognized for Runner up Papers.

Sheng Zhao received his Ph.D. degree from UT in December 2014. He is currently a research associate at the University of Alaska – Fairbanks.

Baoshan Huang, who was Sheng Zhao’s Ph.D. advisor and corresponding author, presented the paper at EATA Conference on June 15, 2015. Huang also chaired a session for the EATA Conference on June 16, 2016.
