Frank Loeffler, UTK Governor’s Chair in Microbiology and Civil and Environmental Engineering, was recently elected to Fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology. The Academy serves as the leadership group within the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). Academy Fellows are eminent leaders in the field of microbiology and are relied upon for authoritative advice and insight on critical issues in microbiology. Fellowship in the Academy demonstrates national recognition of Professor Loeffler’s excellence, originality, and leadership in the microbiological sciences. Professor Loeffler’s research group studies microorganisms that can reduce the impact of certain greenhouse gases and that can remediate chlorinated solvents and radioactive contaminants in groundwater. He and other new members of the Academy will be recognized during a reception at the June ASM conference. “I used to look up to the many incredible leaders in American Academy of Microbiology, and now I’m part of it,” says Loeffler. “A humbling experience.”
