Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering micromobility expert Professor Chris Cherry was recently quoted in a blog post by the giant outdoor adventure outfitter REI. The post, entitled “Can You Get Exercise Riding an E-Bike?”, examines the research about whether or not e-bikes provide riders with as much calorie-burning exercise as traditional bikes.
Cherry was a co-author on a 2017 multidisciplinary study in the Journal of Transport & Health that was cited by the blog. He and his co-author, Professor David Bassett from the Department of Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport Studies in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences said that e-bikes give people a chance to ride who wouldn’t otherwise ride a conventional biked.
Additionally, people who ride e-bikes often ride more frequently and for longer periods of time.
